Our first workshop, taking place at an underfacilitated free school located at Joynal Market, Uttara, lasted 2 hours with over 25 students from the ages of 5-10 participating. We sought to create an encouraging environment, helping children build confidence by exploring their imagination and artistic talents.
They were provided with art supplies like pencils and crayons, funded by our volunteers. The session started through the formal education of basic shapes and how they could implement them in their art. Our volunteers always interacted with them and accompanied them, helping the kids out with drawings. They were encouraged to use the shapes creatively, expressing their own style. The volunteers also decorated their classroom, creating a more colorful space. At the end of the workshop, the children created beautiful and unique artwork. The volunteers helped them decorate the classroom with the children's drawings and later on then provided them with snacks.
Our primary objective was to create an opportunity to explore their interest in art as well as giving them a chance to work with materials they often do not have access to, like color pencils and crayons. We created a basic guideline to approaching art while encouraging their own interpretations. We also tried to enhance their learning space with their own creations, building confidence. With their meaningful interactions with the volunteers, we wanted to ensure they feel seen and valued as equal members of the society
